About Voice of DAISY

Q. Is this Compatible with TalkBack?

Yes, All operations in Voice of DAISY can be performed with TalkBack.

Please see Compatibility with TalkBack.

Q. Can I use any Android devices?

No. The operating environment for Voice of DAISY is shown below.

  • Android devices with Android 4.1 OS or later versions.

Q. How can I transfer DAISY digital talking books that have already been extracted into a computer or CD-R?

If you have extracted DAISY digital talking books on your computer or on a CD-R, please zip each book. Full folders, or just their contents, can be zipped. Including discinfo.html isn’t required.

Q. Can I add DAISY digital talking books from other apps, such as Dropbox?

Yes. DAISY digital talking books downloaded from an online storage service and pasted on the Download folder of your Android device using a file management app can be extracted and played on Voice of DAISY.

Q. Can I play DAISY digital talking books saved on storage media such as micro SD cards?

Yes. DAISY digital talking books taken from micro SD cards and pasted on the Download folder of your Android device using a file management app can be extracted and played on Voice of DAISY.

Q. Can I also play a DAISY 2.02 digital talking book?

Yes.

Q. Can I also play a DAISY 2.0 digital talking book?

No.

Q. Can I also play a DAISY 3 digital talking book?

No.

Q. Can I play DAISY digital talking books containing only text?

No.

Q. Can I set the reading position backward or forward by phrase?

Yes. See the following section: Changing level navigation settings

Q. Can I change the font type?

No.

Q. Can I change the line spacing?

No.

Q. Can I transfer DAISY digital talking books from my Android device to other computers?

Yes.

DAISY digital talking books downloaded using a Web browser or transferred by USB cable remain in the Download folder of your Android device even after their expansion. From the Download folder you can copy and transfer to other computers, unless you didn't delete those file in Download folder.

Q. Can I manage DAISY digital talking books by folders?

No.

Q. How many DAISY digital talking books I can store in Voice of DAISY?

No fixed limit exists; however, the maximum number ultimately depends on the amount of free space on your Android device.

Q. Can I operate functions by using a Bluetooth headset?

No.

Q. Does unplugging earphones cause playback to stop?

No.

Q. The end of sentences in some DAISY digital talking books remains off screen.

This results from errors in each digital talking book's XHTML file.

Please contact the provider or producer of the digital talking book and request a modification.

Downloading DAISY digital talking books

Q. Can I download DAISY digital talking books from the Internet?

Yes.

Although Voice of DAISY doesn’t come with a downloading function, you can add talking books downloaded on Web browsing apps such as Chrome.

Please see further instructions on Adding DAISY digital talking books downloaded from WEB browsers.

Q. Downloading of a DAISY digital talking book has failed.

We recommend using Chrome to download talking books as some Web browsers are not able to operate TalkBack or download talking books.

Chrome can be freely downloaded from Google Play. Some Android devices come installed with Chrome.

However, there are no functions to check the download process or notify you when the download is complete as Chrome is not fully supporting TalkBack yet.

Q. How can I check download process and results of DAISY digital talking books on Chrome?

To check download process and results on some download sites through dialog boxes, install ES FileExplorer on your device, a file management app.

Note:
Even with ES FileExplorer on your device, some download sites won't allow such dialog boxes.
On such sites, sometime after you start downloading the digital talking book, please check if it's in the Download folder by tapping the IMPORT FROM DOWNLOAD FOLDER button icon.

Q. Is there any way to check whether a DAISY digital talking book's download is successfully proceeding on Chrome?

You can see a small animated down arrow symbol (↓) while downloading a DAISY digital talking book on Chrome. However, TalkBack won't read it.

Also, there is no function to get notified of the download completion.

Please check the Download folder in Voice of Daisy, some time after you start downloading Daisy digital talking books in Chrome.

Q. Downloading of a DAISY digital talking book by Web Browser has failed.

If your Android device has insufficient free space, the downloaded book file might not be transferred on Voice of DAISY, or the download may continue indefinitely.

Please make sure to have enough space on your Android device, and try downloading again.

In case of faulty operation or error messages.

Q. Transferred DAISY digital talking books have disappeared.

When you transfer a new talking book, Voice of DAISY 4.0 may overwrite a book if it shares its ID with another one. It happens because DAISY standards mandate that all DAISY digital talking books have an individual ID.

For example if three books share the same ID, the two first ones will be overwritten, and only the third version will remain.

To avoid automatic overwriting, turn off the [Updated book overwriting] function in theSettings menu.

Q. Voice of DAISY has faulty operation.

This may be caused by a bug in the memory management system of the device, among others.

You can either restart your Android device, or restart Voice of DAISY after quitting the application.

The way to quit Voice of DAISY depends on the Android device's model, and whether you are using TalkBack or not.
See general instructions below.

If not using TalkBack

1. Tap the [Recent Apps] button on your Android device.

The list of recent Apps you use will appear.

2. Flick the icon of Voice of DAISY.

If the list is shown vertically, flick the icon to the left.
If the list is shown horizontally, flick the icon to the top.

Voice of DAISY will close.

If using TalkBack

1. Select the [Recent Apps] button on your Android device and double tap it.

The list of recent Apps you use will appear.

2. Flick the icon of Voice of DAISY.

Double tap the icon of Voice of DAISY, holding longer the second time.

TalkBack will read as [Showing two items.] and the pop up menu will appear.

3. Select [Remove from list]

Select [Remove from list] from the pop up menu, and double tap.

Voice of DAISY will close.

Q. [ERROR 104 The audio file does not exist]

This happens when attempting to read a file that shares a DAISY digital talking book's ID with the book you are playing.

Please go back to the list of DAISY digital talking books and play it again.

If you want to treat those DAISY digital talking books sharing the same ID as individual books, turn off the Overwriting updated books function.

Q. [ERROR 107 Not enough free space. Cannot extract zip file] and the transferred zip file has disappeared.

If there isn’t enough space to zip the file on your Android device, please liberate enough space, and try again.

Q. [ERROR 110 xxxxxxxx.zip Unzip failure]

Please check if you have enough space on your Android device. Voice of DAISY can’t extract zip files over 4GB.

Q. [ERROR 115 Unable to play. There is a data error in the ncc.html file of this book]

A problem with character encoding during the book-making process can be a likely cause.

Please contact the provider or producer of the digital talking book and request a modification.

Q. [ERROR 106] appears when I change the zoom level.

This error may occur if the XHTML file of the DAISY digital talking book has a grammatical error.
Please contact the provider or producer of the digital talking book and request a modification.

Q. [Unzip Error] appeared when I tried to extract the DAISY digital talking book I downloaded.

This message may pop up if the download is still in progress.

Please try again after a brief interval.

Q. Are there any guidelines for creating DAISY digital talking books that can play properly on Voice of DAISY?

Q. Is there a size limit for digital talking books?

Yes. Zip files which over 4GB can’t be extracted.

Purchasing Voice of DAISY

Q. I just started using an Android device. How can I purchase Voice of DAISY?

Voice of DAISY can be purchased on Google Play.

Your Android device comes with Play Store installed. Access Play Store and look for "Voice of DAISY" in the search box.

Sign up to Google Play if you don't have an account.

Q. Can I buy it outside of Google Play?

No. Voice of DAISY can only be purchased at the Google Play.

Q. I don't have a credit card. What else can I make a payment?

Without using a credit card, you can buy Voice of DAISY using an GOOGLE PLAY GIFT CARDS.

Q. Can I get a receipt when I purchase the app?

No, we can’t issue a receipt.

Android and iOS versions

Q. I have the iOS version of Voice of DAISY. Can I migrate to the Android version?

No. You need to purchase the Android version.

Q. Is there any functional differences from the iOS version?

Yes. See the differences below.

  • The Android version cannot transfer DAISY digital talking books directly from online storage apps such as Dropbox.
    (You can extract talking books through the Download folder on Android instead.)
  • The Android version cannot operate functions using the Bluetooth headset button.
  • In the Android version, unplugging the earphone does not cause playback to stop.
